Teton Valley’s Iconic Drive-In is Back
The Spud Drive-In near Driggs, Idaho, is one step closer to a comeback. Teton County commissioners unanimously approved redevelopment plans for the historic Highway 33 landmark, expanding its future beyond movies to include dining, camping and community events.
For residents and visitors exploring Teton Valley, Idaho, the project could bring another gathering place to the corridor between Driggs and Victor. The Spud opened in 1956, and its potato truck remains a familiar roadside attraction. Its screen collapsed during a windstorm in April 2022.
The approved redevelopment spans approximately 8.5 acres. Plans include a 55.5-foot screen tower, about 200 parking spaces, a restaurant and concession building, and 10 campsites. The broader destination could host concerts, weddings and other gatherings alongside traditional drive-in movies.
According to the developer’s proposed timeline, movie screenings could begin in August 2027, with food trucks providing initial concessions. Murph’s Mountain Diner, the planned restaurant, bar and permanent concession facility, is targeted to open in June 2028. These dates are goals, rather than guaranteed openings.
The approval also addresses the project’s impact on nearby neighborhoods. Commissioners required highway turn lanes, while events exceeding available parking would need separate county approval and be limited to 12 days annually. Public comments highlighted both enthusiasm for restoring the Spud and concerns about traffic, noise and neighboring homes.
For anyone considering living in Driggs or Victor, community amenities are part of understanding daily life in Teton Valley. This redevelopment offers an example of how the area is balancing its history with new activity.
