Teton Pass Safety Changes: New WY22 Rules Follow a Tragic Summer

Teton Pass Safety Changes - OCT 1.

After a tragic summer on Teton Pass, Wyoming is introducing a new safety requirement for drivers traveling Wyoming Highway 22. Beginning October 1, 2026, the WY22 SAFE PASS program requires self-certification before eligible vehicles cross the pass connecting Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Teton Valley, Idaho.

The measure follows summer crashes and vehicle incidents that killed three people and injured several others, according to the Jackson Hole News&Guide. It arrives amid calls for stronger protections on the steep mountain route used by residents, commuters and visitors.

Who needs Teton Pass certification? WYDOT’s portal lists drivers of recreational vehicles, vehicles towing trailers, and vehicles with a gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating or gross combined vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or more. This includes RVs and trailer combinations, rather than only commercial trucks.

Drivers complete the program at SafePass.wyoroad.info, reviewing information about steep grades, braking, weight restrictions and mountain driving hazards. The resulting certification letter is valid for one year. Drivers subject to the requirement who have not completed certification must use another route.

The existing 60,000-pound weight restriction and seasonal restrictions remain in effect. Certification does not override those limits. According to the September 25 news report, there is no formal grace period, and officers may check certification during a stop for another violation. Potential penalties depend on the circumstances and applicable statute.

For people living in Jackson Hole or considering homes in Victor and Driggs, Teton Pass safety is an everyday concern. Understanding travel requirements matters when planning a commute, moving household belongings or towing recreational equipment.
