Jackson’s New Street Plan Could Change How You Get Around

The Town of Jackson is moving forward with an updated Community Streets Plan designed to make local roads safer and more functional for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and public transit users.

The plan serves as a long-term blueprint for Jackson’s transportation network rather than a fixed construction schedule. It identifies how different streets could be designed based on the types of travel they are expected to accommodate.

Some corridors would remain largely unchanged. Broadway would continue functioning as a major arterial route intended to move high volumes of people and vehicles, while Kelly Avenue would maintain a balance between automobile and bicycle access.

Other streets could see more noticeable changes. The plan proposes expanding the multimodal approach currently used along Snow King Avenue, where seasonal barriers create added protection for cyclists. Similar protected bicycle infrastructure could eventually extend from South Park Loop Road through town and beyond St. John’s Health.

The plan also identifies potential neighborhood bikeways along streets such as Hansen Avenue and Jackson Street. These routes could include traffic-calming features, traffic circles or vehicle diverters intended to discourage drivers from using residential streets as shortcuts.

Town officials acknowledge that proposed changes involving vehicle access or on-street parking may generate opposition when individual projects move forward. They are also concerned that many residents may not review the broader plan until a project directly affects their neighborhood.

The Jackson Town Council expressed general support for the updated plan and directed staff to return with a proposal for formal approval later this year.

For Jackson Hole property owners and prospective buyers, transportation planning can influence neighborhood accessibility, traffic patterns, parking and long-term quality of life.
